What is The Velvet Room Speakeasy?

The Velvet Room Speakeasy is a 1920s Prohibition-themed cocktail bar at 112B S. Maple Street in downtown Murfreesboro, entered through the alley behind the Hoffman Brothers Building. Owned by Daniel and Crystal Creach, it serves craft cocktails, wine and scratch-made small plates Wednesday through Saturday evenings and is open to the public for guests 21 and older.

The bar describes itself as an experience rather than a place to grab a drink: organic, elevated craft cocktails, an elegant wine list, scratch-made tapas and entertainment, all behind a hidden door. The theme runs through everything, from a dress code and a riddle on the website to a cocktail menu written in Prohibition slang. Beer is “giggle water,” spirits are “hooch” and food is “vittles.”

It is a natural pick for a date night in Murfreesboro, an anniversary or a night out with friends who want something dressier than the usual Murfreesboro bar.

Where Is The Velvet Room Speakeasy?

The Velvet Room is at 112B S. Maple St. in downtown Murfreesboro, one block off the Public Square. South Maple Street runs along the west side of the square, and the bar is in the Hoffman Brothers Building. You will not find a front door. Finding it is part of the fun, and the bar gives first-timers these directions:

  1. Go around to the back of the building and head down the alley.
  2. Ignore the graffiti and garbage cans. They are stage props.
  3. Look for a wood staircase and “112B” above the iron gates on the left.

Parking. Downtown has on-street parking and two public parking garages, and there is no parking time limit in the evenings or on weekends, so every hour the bar is open is covered. The Rutherford County Judicial Building garage off Maple Street and the Civic Plaza garage off Vine and Church streets are each a block or two from the alley.

Accessibility. The Velvet Room says it is wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant and appreciates a call ahead at (615) 624-7438.

Many drinks come in a non-alcoholic version, at $15 for signature drinks and $13 for classics, and the menu says the bartender will craft something off-menu on request.

Wine, beer and spirits. Wine is poured by the 6-ounce or 9-ounce glass or by the bottle, with sparkling, white, red, rosé, Moscato and port. Domestic beers are $5, craft and imports $8, premium craft $11, and the spirits list runs deep on bourbon and rye.

Food. Small plates include soft pretzel bites, cheesy pinsa bread, hummus, ricotta-stuffed squash blossoms, meatballs with sriracha hot honey and gorgonzola-stuffed olives ($8–$14). There are charcuterie ($23) and cheese ($18) boards for two, artisan flatbreads ($14–$19), sandwiches served with kettle chips ($16–$18) and desserts such as homemade cannoli and a 1930s-style butter cake ($9–$11). Happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, has its own menu. See more Murfreesboro happy hours.

What Should You Expect?

Atmosphere. The bar bills itself as sophisticated and elegant, with a “club atmosphere,” and asks guests to dress for it. The menu is written to be read, with a story behind each signature drink. During exceptionally busy times the bar keeps a 90-minute service window per table so more guests can get a seat.

Dress code. Business casual: collared or button-down shirts, slacks, sport coats, stylish jeans, dresses, skirts, blouses, rompers and jumpsuits, with dress shorts allowed in summer. Not allowed: ball caps and athletic hats, T-shirts, hoodies, athletic wear, flip-flops, heavily torn jeans and overly revealing or offensive clothing. The host keeps a blazer on hand for anyone in a hoodie or T-shirt, and first-time guests who stumble in get some grace. Workday attire and uniforms are fine during happy hour, and you can stay after 7 p.m. as long as your plate and glass stay busy.

Age policy. Every guest must be 21 or older with a valid ID.

Best nights. Wednesday and Thursday have no cover and the easiest tables. Friday and Saturday are the busiest, stay open until midnight and carry the $10 cover after 7 p.m., so book online. Happy hour, 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, is the cheapest way in.

Who Is Behind The Velvet Room?

The Velvet Room is owned by Daniel and Crystal Creach, who are introduced on the bar's About Us page. The signature list includes a cocktail called “Crystal's Garden,” a vodka, cucumber and elderflower drink, and the website invites you to subscribe to its newsletter to “get the lowdown from the kingpin himself,” which tells you how seriously the theme is taken.

Is Membership Required?

No. Membership is optional and the bar is open to the public. A single Founders membership is $125 a month or $1,300 a year, and a couple membership is $200 a month or $2,200 a year, with no registration fee. Perks include free weekend guests (one for single, two for couple, additional guests $10 each), exclusive access to reservations, a free event ticket every quarter, pre-sale tickets for ticketed events, monthly offers and VIP treatment for walk-ins. Details are on the membership page.

Things to Do Near The Velvet Room

The Velvet Room opens at 5 p.m. and the kitchen is small plates only, so most people pair it with dinner on the square. A few doors up at 106 S. Maple, Domenico's Italian Deli does Italian sandwiches; Marina's on the Square and Jack Brown's Beer & Burger Joint are both on the square for a sit-down dinner first, and Simply Pure Sweets is the dessert stop. On Friday Night Live dates there is a free concert on the square before the bar fills up. See the downtown restaurant guide, Murfreesboro nightlife and this week's events for more.
